Our Oak Single Stave Worktops are the embodiment of everything we do at Norfolk Oak. We hand select, from what can only be described as the finest furniture grade timber in the first place, the absolute pinnacle of beauty. With plank widths from 130 to 300 mm wide (around 5 to 12 inches), averaging 175mm to 200mm (7 to 8 inches), the effects are stunning. In a single stave worktop, these planks will run the entire length. All of these worktops are made right here, in sunny Norfolk.

Norfolk Oak exclusively use American White Oak, the hardest and most beautiful of all the Oaks around the world. The very best comes from Northern Ohio, and for us that means close to Lake Erie. Here the combination of four distinct seasons, especially incredibly harsh winters, make for perfect growing conditions. We even go to the trouble of selecting individual trees.

Creating Super Stave worktops is all about attention to detail. Of this detail , the single most critical element of the entire process is drying the timber. We take much longer drying our timber then even the best timber merchants in the USA. It's not that even the best have low standards, it's just that no one can match ours. Having painstakingly dried our Oak, we then keep all of our wide stave material in humidity controlled environments. We are, in fact, the only company to do this in the UK. Meticulous attention to detail, yes, but why do anything less.

When machining the Oak, we use our state of the art equipment to guarantee glue edges so precise there is less than 1/20 of a millimetre variance over a 6 m length. Our automated clamp carrier then exerts around three tons per linear metre, ensuring these glue lines never fail. To finish it off, the worktops go through our enormous calibrating wide belt sander, and then through our three head finishing sander. At this point, they are ready for customising to your requirements.

It's all in the details

We recognise there is a cost to all of this detail, but we would like to think we know our business, and that every extra element of cost has a marked increase in value for you, the client. Our infrastructural cost recently passed the million pound mark, and yet not one piece of equipment or process did not add value well ahead of its cost.

We have a passion for timber, and a dedication to doing it right. We are definitely unique.

At any one time, we hold about 45 m³ of Oak single stave planks in climate controlled storage. With length up to 5 1/2 metres, which was until now unheard of, that's enough to make over 300 worktops. Our production facilities in the UK are able to handle up to 250 linear metres of single stave worktops in one day. In short, this means no time delay in the ordering process.

Our Oak samples are approximately 400 mm by 300 mm and arrive fully oiled and finished. This level of finishing, together with their large size, provide you with an excellent display of the beauty and quality of our wood. They also make great chopping boards when you are finished with them!
