Maple is a wood of phenomenal hardness and exotic beauty. The grain varies like waves breaking on rocks, which creates some of the finest and most elegant figuring seen in wood. It is crucial for Maple - in this case Black Maple - to come from areas where there are incredibly hard winters. Our Maple is from the very northern States in America, for example Vermont (the home of Maple syrup), New Hampshire and Maine, or from Southern Canada. The sort of places where you would expect to have snow on the ground for five months straight.
Black Maple is around thirty percent harder than Oak. Which is a pretty good starting point for a kitchen worktop then. Like our Cherry, which is chosen specifically for its colour, the same is true of Maple. We have tried hard to create a worktop which is not too 'white' and not too brown either. The results are spectacular.
When Black Maple - ironically called Black Maple despite the light, almost white colour of the lumber when first felled, but in fact named so because of the deep purple colour of the leaves - is sanded down to a fine finish the top surface feels like it has been enameled. Light readily reflects from this surface whilst at the same time revealing the grain, making it an ideal work surface for a kitchen with limited natural light.
Our Maple worktops are available in two different styles;
Constructed using long, continuous, clean planks that run the entire length of the worktop. Our Maple single wide stave worktops consist of random width staves varying between 90 mm and 140 mm in width. Typically you can expect to find between 4 and 6 staves in one of our standard 636 mm wide Maple worktops.
As with all our Maple worktops, any width is possible. Lengths up to around 5 metres are no problem. Longer sizes are available given advanced notice.
As standard our Maple worktops are supplied with square edges, sanded smooth, ready to oil. Please see our Bespoke Service page for information regarding our oiling service and edging options, as well as further options such as curved cuts and sink/hob cutouts.
We understand that purchasing worktops is a tremendous decision - one that will affect you everyday for years to come. If you'd like to see the incredible beauty of our Maple for yourself, we have chopping board samples available.
A style unique to Norfolk Oak. Constructed using long, wide planks with a maximum of 2 joins per stave length of 3 metres. As with our single wide stave, our traditional plank Maple worktops consist of random width staves varying between 90 mm and 140 mm in width, with individual stave lengths of approximately 1200 mm to 1800 mm.
A great alternative to single wide stave when extremely long lengths are required. Continous lengths up to 6 metres are no problem at all.
We can bespoke cut almost any size of worktop, however please find below as a guide some example prices for our Maple worktops. All our worktops are 45 mm thick as standard and all prices include VAT.
